More Details on How to Use Playaway:

How do I change the battery?
Locate the battery door at the wide base of the player (the door is covered with the small title label on the wide base). Then, use your thumb, coin or a screwdriver to push the door away from the player so it snaps off. Some battery covers may be harder to remove then others, so you may have to use a bit of force or a tool to help it off. Once you have the battery door off, remove the old battery and replace with a fully charged battery. Lastly, snap the cover back into place.

How long does one AAA battery last?
Every Playaway comes pre-loaded with a standard Energizer AAA battery that will provide an average of 20 hours of playtime. The majority of our titles will only require one battery to listen to the entire title.

How do I know how much battery life is left in my unit?
The Playaway LCD has a small battery icon that is displayed on screen. There are three levels of battery life reflected in the icon. When one bar is left in the battery icon, you have 20% power left.

How do I use the lanyard?
Locate the lanyard attachment area at the narrow top of the player. We have two versions of Playaway lanyard attachments, so please check to see if you have a clip or an indentation at the top. If you’re not sure which version you have, you can see a diagram at the bottom of the How to Play section.

Players shipped before August 2007 will have a clip at the top of the unit. To release the clip, position the Playaway with the book cover facing you, and use your thumb, coin or a screwdriver to push the clip up. Some clips will be harder to release then others, so you may have to use some force or a tool to push the clip away from the player until it snaps up. Next, thread and loop the lanyard through the clip.

Players shipped after August 2007 will have an indentation at the top of the player. To attach the lanyard, simple thread and loop the lanyard into the indentation.

You can now wear it around your neck or use it as a shoulder strap.

Why are there two library versions for Playaway?
We make periodic product enhancements based on product testing and customer feedback. All product enhancements are intended to make the user experience easier while giving the user the maximum amount of control over their audio experience. After several rounds of customer feedback and usage evaluations, we have modified a few of the functionality features on the back of Playaway. This model will be the only one shipped on new orders, starting in June 2007. You can view both Playaway models in our How to Play section.

I have the version of Playaway without the power button. If I set additional bookmarks, how do I remove them?
In order to remove previous bookmarks you must press the bookmark button at the time you are viewing the bookmark on the LCD screen. There is no way to remove all bookmarks at one time.

What do I do if my Playaway locks up?
Like any good storyteller, sometimes the Playaway just needs a moment to catch its breath. First, turn it on and off. If that doesn't solve the problem, remove and reinsert the battery.

My Playaway will not turn on. What do I do?
First, we recommend inserting a fresh battery. If the player still does not turn on, please contact customer service.

Library Packaging:

What type of library packaging do you include with Playaway titles?
Do I need to purchase any accessories separately?
Each library order comes ready to shelve and ready to circulate. Each Playaway comes in a lockable VHS-style case, complete with a professionally designed graphical insert, user instructions, and foam insert. Inside the case, you will find the Playaway with a battery inside and one pair of earbuds. Locking clip and key accessories can be purchased separately for libraries wishing to lock each case.

Can my library purchase extra packaging items?
Absolutely! While we do include one complete package solution for every item ordered, libraries can purchase additional packaging items as well. If you have a need that is not listed in the accessories section of our online catalog, please contact your sales representative or use our contact form.

How should my library present Playaway titles to our patrons?
Every library is different and therefore may present Playaway titles differently to patrons.
Many libraries use existing waist-high shelving or gondola systems. Other libraries prefer rolling shelving carts to present Playaway in different areas of the library. We also provide a simple and effective way to present Playaway with our Corrugate Library Display Fixture, which is available in the accessories section of our online store. Please checkout our online marketing kit to download materials to hang up or give to your patrons.

Ordering Playaway for your Library:

I am unsure about where I can order Playaway. I’m aware of your partnerships but I’m not sure where to find a complete title list for libraries.
In addition to selling directly to libraries, we also have several partnerships with national distributors to support you. In addition to the titles that we have rights to, Recorded Books also offers a completely separate collection of their titles on Playaway, available directly at their website at www.recordedbooks.com.

The titles that we offer in our catalog are also available to libraries at:

Baker & Taylor
Brodart
BWI

Visit our K-12 page for more information on our partnerships in the K-12 schools market.

I have ordered directly from Playaway before. Why do I have to set up a new account?
If you have not ordered online before, you can quickly and easily set up an account. We suggest you do so before you start shopping so your active cart will be saved to your account. If you have questions, you can contact your Playaway sales rep or our customer service department for support.

I need to ship to multiple addresses. How do I do this online?
You will be able to add multiple ship-to addresses during checkout. However, if you need assistance, please contact our customer service department so we can help you place the order.

Is there a way to order MARC Records without buying Playaway titles?
Yes. If you have a need to order MARC Records for Playaways that you already own, you can email the list of titles and ISBN numbers to librarysales@playawaydigital.com, or call our customer support at (877) 893-0808.

The same high quality records are also available through OCLC for participating libraries.

Do you offer any discounts to libraries?
Yes, discounts may be available for your library. You can inquire about discounts by using our contact form, or you can also enter your question in the "notes" field during checkout, and a sales representative will get in touch with you before your order is processed.

General Product Information:

How big is a Playaway and how much content can it hold?
Playaway is about half the size of a deck of cards and holds content up to 80 hours of play time.

How does Playaway compare to other types of audiobooks, like CDs, MP3s, and cassettes?
Playaway is the only format of audiobook that does not require a separate player, so it comes ready-to-listen, without the need for a certain type of player or advanced technical know-how. Additionally, Playaway allows the listener to control the speed of the narrator's voice and automatically remembers where you left off when you power down.

How does Playaway compare to digital downloads and other forms of on-the-go downloading like cell phones?
Playaway comes pre-loaded with great digital content, so it does not require information transfer fees, subscriptions, memberships, or even an Internet connection. Just plug-in your headphones and listen wherever you go.

What does the audio sound like on a Playaway?
Playaway audio is of equal or greater quality to digital downloads available today, due to proprietary audio processing, production and leading edge codecs.

Why can't I add, delete or transfer content on or from a Playaway?
In order to protect the copyrighted works of authors and publishers as traditional books do, you are unable to make copies of Playaway.
