2010 Youth Media Awards and Honors on Playaway - It was another exciting year for the Youth Media Awards as a room full of cheering fans of children’s and young adult titles collected together to celebrate the importance of literature for youth and honor the most noteworthy additions from the year prior.  With two Newbery Honors and three Odyssey Award Honor titles on Playaway, you’ll want to make sure your library has these titles available in your children and YA collections.
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly - Kelly’s debut novel, set in early 20th century Texas, features Callie, a young teen whose non-traditional passions and interests complicate her transition to womanhood. While her mother is equipping her with wifely talents - cooking and needlepoint - Callie finds fulfillment in the outdoors, examining different plant specimens and collecting exotic stones. Her grandfather, a sort of naturalist, nurtures her interest despite her mother’s growing concern over Callie’s future. As she comes into her own, Callie understands more clearly the conflict between her dream of becoming a scientist and society’s expectations of her.
In the Belly of the Bloodhound by L.A. Meyer - When listeners left her last, Jacky was on the run with a reward for her capture. Taking sanctuary in her old Boston boarding school, our swashbuckler heroine determines to make herself a “lady” and trade in her trousers for a proper skirt. But not for long! Jacky is back on her sea legs after her classmates and friends are kidnapped and hidden on a slave ship. Katherine Kellgren’s reading will not disappoint as the listener embarks on another one of Jacky’s adventures.
